Board and train for reactive dogs
Board and train promises to hand back a fixed dog after two to six weeks away. For reactive dogs the reality is more complicated, and the downside risk is higher than for most dogs. We do not sell training — this is what we would want to know before paying for it.
What board and train can realistically do
Intensive, daily, well-structured sessions can build skills faster than a weekly class: engagement with the handler, a reliable recall, muzzle conditioning, calm behaviour on a mat, structured exposure at a safe distance. That work is real and it can be valuable.
What it cannot do is transfer automatically to your house, your street and your hands. Reactivity is tied to context and to the handler. Without a serious handover programme, gains fade within weeks.
Where it goes wrong
Programmes that rely on suppression — corrections that stop the barking without changing how the dog feels — can produce a quiet dog who then bites with less warning. For a dog that is already fearful, weeks in an unfamiliar kennel with strangers can also undo trust that took months to build.
You also lose oversight. You are not there, and a reactive dog cannot tell you what happened. That is precisely why the questions below matter.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What methods, specifically? Ask for the tools and the consequences used, by name. "Balanced" is not an answer.
- Can I watch, live? Cameras or scheduled visits. Refusal is a decision you should weigh heavily.
- Where does my dog live between sessions? Hours in a crate, contact with other dogs, and who is there overnight.
- What does the handover include? Number of sessions with you, and support afterwards.
- What are the credentials? Qualifications, insurance, and references from owners of dogs like yours.
Often better: training at home, care separately
For many reactive dogs the stronger combination is a qualified behaviourist working with you, in your environment, plus overnight care that simply keeps the dog away from triggers when you travel. You keep oversight, the dog keeps its context, and nobody is asked to fix months of behaviour work in a fortnight.
